The Raspberry Pi 4 Model B is a single-board computer that has become the reference for homelabs, self-hosted infrastructure, pentesting projects and pretty much anything that needs low-power compute in a compact form factor. Its biggest strength isn't just in the specs, but in its expandability. The 40-pin GPIO header (General Purpose Input/Output, programmable digital pins to talk to external hardware) is compatible with hundreds of HATs (Hardware Attached on Top): 4G/LTE modems, RTC clocks, ADC converters, e-ink displays, PoE controllers and a long etcetera. On top of that there are two flat-cable connectors: the DSI (Display Serial Interface) for touchscreens without taking up HDMI, and the CSI (Camera Serial Interface) for native camera modules. On the software side it runs any relevant ARM distribution. The community and documentation behind the project are one of its key assets. Efficient, silent and modular. A solid base for home servers, VPN nodes, monitoring stations, home-automation controllers or any project that needs a full Linux in a compact form factor.
