Hackeed Storage

Private, custom Nextcloud hosted on European infrastructure — specifically Scaleway's in France (Paris). The goal of the project is to offer a competitive storage service so you can keep your files securely and affordably.

What it is

It is a cloud storage service built on top of Nextcloud: files, shared folders, calendar, contacts and desktop and mobile apps. All under your account, encrypted in transit, hosted inside the EU.

It runs on a single rented x86 server at Scaleway Paris, with Nextcloud, the database and the cache packaged in Docker. Files live in an S3-compatible object store, also inside the EU, so the server can be lost and rebuilt without losing them.

Prices include VAT.
Active friend: a person who signs up to Hackeed Storage for the first time entering your email at registration and whose subscription is up to date. The signup month does not count. During the grace period after cancellation they do not count as active either.
Discount: €0.50 per month per active friend. With 2 friends the 20 GB plan is free. The 100 GB and 200 GB plans are enhanced and are free with 3 and 6 friends respectively.
When it applies: on the monthly plan, on the invoice following each month a friend was active. On the yearly plan, the months each friend was active are summed and discounted at renewal.
Maximum: the discount never exceeds the price of your plan. Any excess does not accumulate and is not paid out in cash.
If a friend cancels, they stop counting from that moment, and so does the bonus if you fall below the required number.
If you change plan, the discount is calculated against the new plan from that moment.
Each friend counts for one person only, and only if they enter your email at signup. It cannot be added afterwards.
Your own accounts do not count, nor accounts created only to obtain a discount. Hackeed may remove the discount if it detects abuse.
Hackeed may modify or end the program with 30 days notice. Discounts already earned are honoured.
Paying yearly: each plan increases its quota: 25 GB on the 20 GB, 110 GB on the 100 GB and 220 GB on the 200 GB. Equivalent to paying 10 months.

Philosophy

Transparency: we publish what runs the service, how we scale it and what breaks.
Free software: full Nextcloud, your data is yours, no ad exploitation in the middle.
Emerging project: no SLA (Service Level Agreement). You pay to support the project and to have your cloud in identifiable hands that commit not to access your files except on your request, a technical incident or a legal obligation.
Learning in public: a technical logbook of the build with Docker, Nextcloud and object storage. The goal is to learn the internals of cloud storage and publish them along the way.

How it works

Pick a plan and pay on the landing (Stripe Checkout, monthly or yearly subscription).
You get a Nextcloud email to set your password.
Manage your subscription from the Stripe customer portal (link sent by email).

The service is still being designed. We are not accepting sign-ups yet: in the trial phase we will open spots among friends to measure real usage before opening to the public.
